R.I.P IV Challenge

RIP

The Readers Imbibing Peril IV challenge is hosted by Carl at Stainless Steel Droppings and encourages us to read books from the following:

Mystery.
Suspense.
Thriller.
Dark Fantasy.
Gothic.
Horror.

Supernatural.

This is my first opportunity to join this incredibly popular challenge and it looks fabulous. I have spent so much time checking out all the great books other people are planning on reading that I’m only now thinking about posting mine!

I’m going to sign up for Peril the First:

PERIL 1ST

Read Four books of any length, from any subgenre of scary stories that you choose.

Apart from spy thrillers, I don’t usually choose books from any of these categories so this will be a real challenge. I love Autumn and the idea of reading some scary books as Halloween approaches sounds perfect. I can’t wait!

I am going to choose from:

The Castle of Otranto – Horace Walpole
Jane Eyre – Charlotte Bronte
Wuthering Heights – Emily Bronte
The Thirteenth Tale – Diane Setterfield (Because so many people recommend it)
Interview with the Vampire – Anne Rice (completely out of my comfort zone)
The Mysteries of Udolpho – Ann Radcliffe
The Victoria Chaise Longue – Marghanita Laski
Dracula – Bram Stoker
The Woman in Black – Susan Hill
The Moonstone – Wilkie Collins
The Suspicions of Mr Whicher – Kate Summerscale
Home Before Dark – Charles Maclean
The Dead Zone – Stephen King (absolutely completely out of my comfort zone)
The Time Traveler’s Wife – Audrey Niffenegger (I must be the only person left still to read this book)
Out – Natsuo Kirino
Strangers – Taichi Yamada
Rebecca – Daphne Du Maurier
The Turn of the Screw – Henry James
The Eye of the Needle – Ken Follett

  1. Great list! I loved so many of the ones you have chosen. Out is my favourite thriller, so I’d love to know what you thought of it.

I am planning to read The Castle of Otrano for this challenge too!

  2. Thanks Jackie! I’m really looking forward to this challenge. I am planning on joining the Japanese literature challenge as well so definitely plan to read Out. I will let you know how I find it!

  3. If I were giving an award out for best reading pools for this year’s challenge, you would certainly be in the running. Wow, what a fantastic list. I just need to print this one off and keep it with me.

Thanks for joining in, it is an honor to have you in the challenge and I do look forward to seeing what you decide to choose out of this great list.

  4. Thank you so much Carl and for hosting such a cool challenge. I am defintely going to choose something that is out of my comfort zone. I might start with something a bit tamer first and save the scary ones for nearer Halloween!
